Each train company has its own rules, so the number of bags you can take on board may vary. Here you'll find information about the maximum number of bags allowed, depending on the train you're travelling on.
- You can take up to 2 labelled bags per person, with maximum dimensions of 70 x 90 x 50 cm (suitcase, large rucksack, hiking bag, sports bag) and 1 labelled piece of hand luggage with maximum dimensions of 40 x 30 x 15 cm (backpack, tote bag, laptop bag).
You are also allowed to bring additional items:
- Skis, pushchairs and scooters
- Surfboard or snowboard in a cover measuring up to 90 x 130 x 50 cm
- Mobility equipment for disabled passengers
- Bicycle dismantled and packed in a cover up to 130 x 90 cm
Travelling with a non-folding, non-dismantlable bike? You must book a space for your bike when you buy your train ticket. The cost is €10 per bike, per journey. Bike reservations must be made at the same time as your train ticket purchase, but this option is not available on Swile Travel.
There are no maximum size limits for luggage on TER trains. However, you must be able to handle your bags yourself and they must fit in the designated storage areas on regional trains.
You can take as much hand luggage as you like (up to 130 x 90 cm) as long as you can carry it yourself 💪.
Here’s a list of other items you can bring with you:
- Bicycles, as long as they are folded or have the wheels removed, and packed in a cover (maximum 130 x 90 cm)
- Folded pushchairs, skis in a cover (one pair per passenger), scooters (electric or not), folded or dismantled
- Surfboards or snowboards in a cover (maximum 130 x 90 cm)
- Musical instruments in a case, preferably hard (maximum 130 x 90 cm)
- Manual or electric wheelchairs for passengers with reduced mobility; these passengers are allowed to keep their wheelchair with them, whether or not they remain seated in it during the journey
- If you’re travelling with a Standard or Standard Premier ticket: you can take 2 bags/suitcases no longer than 85cm and 1 small piece of hand luggage (handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, etc).
- If you’re travelling with a Business Premier ticket: you can take 3 bags/suitcases no longer than 85cm and 1 small piece of hand luggage.
You can board the train with up to 3 items of hand luggage, as long as the total weight does not exceed 25 kg or 290 cm in total dimensions.
The maximum permitted size is 85 x 55 x 35 cm (height–width–depth). For AVE International journeys between Spain and France, the same rules apply, but luggage must be labelled.
With your ticket, you can board free of charge with 1 piece of hand luggage not exceeding 36 x 27 x 15 cm (height, width and depth) and 1 cabin bag not exceeding 55 x 35 x 25 cm.
You can take the following free of charge:
🛄 Suitcases
2 standard-sized suitcases measuring up to 80 cm (height) x 50 cm (width) x 31 cm (depth), including pockets, wheels and handles, per passenger, plus one small piece of hand luggage (30 x 30 x 35 cm), which must be placed under the seat.
🐱 Animals
The bag, basket or cage carrying an animal during the journey must comply with the luggage size limits and counts as one item of luggage within your allowance as described above.
⛷️ Skis, snowboard, surfboard, pushchair
One pair of skis, a snowboard or surfboard, or a pushchair can be counted as one item of luggage per passenger, in a closed cover (maximum permitted size: 2m long), to be stored on board so as not to inconvenience other passengers, staff or compromise safety. Each cover then counts as one item of luggage and is included in your allowance.
🚲 Bicycles
- Folding bikes, folding scooters or folding pushchairs can be counted as one item of luggage if folded and placed in a carrying case measuring up to 80 cm x 110 cm x 45 cm, including pockets, wheels and handles. Each case then counts as one item of luggage and is included in your allowance.
- Traditional bikes, with one wheel removed, placed entirely inside a case measuring up to 80 cm x 110 cm x 45 cm, can travel with you. They must be stored on board so as not to inconvenience other passengers, staff or compromise safety. Each case then counts as one item of luggage and is included in your allowance.
Only one exception (skis, snowboard, surfboard, pushchair, bike or scooter) is allowed per passenger.
Trenitalia reserves the right to refuse boarding to passengers and luggage that do not comply with these rules, with no right to a refund.
If you exceed your luggage allowance or have an oversized bag, and it is still accepted on board under safe conditions, a €40 penalty will be charged per item.
💡 Luggage management
In all cases, make sure you label all your bags before departure, and store them in the designated areas on board the train so as not to block the aisles.
