What should I do if there is a disruption (delay or cancellation) on my train journey? Can I get a refund if my train is delayed or cancelled?

This article explains how to proceed and what the conditions are for refunds or compensation in the event of a delayed or cancelled train.

đź‘€ Good to know!

SNCF has set out different procedures for requesting refunds or compensation depending on the type of train used. Check the type of train on your booking (TER, Intercité or TGV Inoui) and refer to the relevant case in the options below.

👉 My train was cancelled

TGV or Intercités

If your TGV or Intercité is cancelled, your ticket automatically becomes exchangeable and refundable at 100%, regardless of the original terms and conditions.

  • If you do not wish to continue with your journey (TGV, IntercitĂ© or a combination of TGV/IntercitĂ©s + TER tickets): You can simply cancel the booking in your Swile Travel profile to get a refund. If the cancellation incurs any fees, you can still confirm it and then contact us with your booking reference, so we can submit a claim to SNCF for a refund of the fees.

  • If you wish to continue your TGV or IntercitĂ©s journey: You can either make an exchange (which may incur a fee), or make a new booking and cancel the current one in your Swile Travel profile. 👉 In both cases, please let us know so we can submit a claim to SNCF for a refund of the fees. Please note that processing times for these claims are very long (around 3 to 6 months) and we will refund your company as soon as SNCF has reimbursed us.

TER only

A TER ticket is valid all day. You can therefore board another TER to the same destination on the same day with the same ticket.

If there are no other TERs available or the times do not fit your travel plans, you must cancel the ticket the day before departure without fail. After this, the ticket cannot be refunded by SNCF or Swile Travel.

To receive compensation, you must submit your request directly to SNCF (SNCF no longer handles claims from travel agencies and will only process requests sent by the traveller themselves).

Here’s how to request your refund:

  • Log in to the TER trains website

  • Select the region where you travelled by train.

  • Complete the online form for TER only

👉 My train was delayed

TGV or Intercités

If your TGV or Intercités was delayed, Swile Travel can submit a claim for a refund to SNCF if, for example, the delay caused you to cancel your journey due to a missed connection.

However, if your TGV or Intercités was delayed but you still travelled, SNCF offers compensation to passengers for all journeys on TGV InOui or Intercités. This compensation is owed to you personally, regardless of who purchased the ticket.
To receive this personal compensation, you need to request it yourself using the G30 form: TGV Inoui and Intercités delay form

TER only

For TER trains, no compensation is currently offered by SNCF in the event of a delay, unless the delay causes you to miss a connection. In this case, you may be entitled to a refund for the unused part of your journey.

You must submit your request directly to SNCF (SNCF no longer handles claims from travel agencies and will only process requests sent by the traveller themselves).

Here’s how to request your refund:

  • Log in to the TER trains website

  • Select the region where you travelled by train.

  • Complete the online form for TER only
