Face value: What are the conditions for exemption?

đź’¸ What is the face value?
The face value of a meal voucher represents the monetary value given to this voucher. As the administrator, you are free to choose the amount you allocate to it.

Here are the key points to consider if you want to benefit from exemption from social security contributions:

  • The employee's contribution must be between 40% and 50% of the value of the voucher.
  • The employer's contribution to financing the meal vouchers must be between 50% and 60% of the value of the voucher. If the 50% threshold is not met, the entire employer contribution must be added back to the contributions base. To find out more, please read this article.

đź’ˇ Since 01 January 2024, here are the exemption conditions to be taken into account:

  • The maximum exemption ceiling for the employer's contribution to the financing of meal vouchers has been raised to €7.18.
  • The maximum exempted value of the meal voucher is between €11.97 (for a 60% employer contribution) and €14.36 (for a 50% employer contribution). Beyond that, the amount will be subject to tax and contributions.

This new provision is the result of a decree dated 26 December 2023 and is supplemented by an update to the BOFIP. You can also visit the URSSAF website for full information on this subject.
