Do Commuting Benefits Expire? What Happens to Them at the End of the Year?

By law, your home-to-work travel benefits are based on the calendar year. This means that on 31/12 each year, any amount you haven’t used during the year will expire from your account and be automatically returned to your employer.

You therefore have until 31/12 (inclusive) to spend your mobility benefits. After this date, you’ll see the expiry directly on your Home-to-work travel account. The relevant account will be marked as Expired.

📆 In summary

After 31/12/26, you’ll no longer be able to use your 2026 mobility benefits with your Swile card or submit new reimbursement requests. You’ll need to wait for your 2027 top-up to make new claims 😊

👀 What about my ongoing reimbursement requests?

👉 Sustainable mobility expenses

Reimbursement requests for sustainable mobility expenses made in 2026 that are still being processed will continue to be reimbursed using your 2027 home-to-work travel benefits.

👉 Transport subscriptions

Reimbursement requests for transport subscriptions made in 2026 will be closed once they have been fully reimbursed from your 2026 account. If you want to continue receiving reimbursement for the following year, you’ll need to submit a new reimbursement request with a 2027 transport certificate.

📌 Please note!

You’ll need to activate your new Home-to-work travel account by signing your declaration of honour for the new year!
