What environmental improvements have been made to my Swile card?

The Swile card, its packaging, transport, and end-of-life process have all been optimised to ensure a more controlled environmental impact:

♻️ The Swile card is now made from 100% recycled PVC*.

Its environmental impact is lower compared to standard PVC: it uses existing materials, following the principles of a circular economy.
This material is suited to the Swile Card’s lifespan, which is extended to 5 years, whereas other materials like PLA (polylactic acid, made from corn starch) or wood can be prone to breaking down or having ink that fades over time.

♻️ The Swile card’s packaging is recyclable*.

It’s made from paper sourced from responsibly managed, FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council®) certified forests. Its weight has been halved compared to the previous version (from 44.3g to 16.2g), significantly reducing the amount of paper we use.
The inks used for printing are solvent-free and emit no VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which helps make the packaging recyclable*. The process is explained in our FAQ, here.

💌 Swile cards are sent without air transport within mainland France.

Thanks to the optimised weight of its packaging, the Swile card is sent by La Poste using the “Lettre Verte” service, which guarantees it isn’t transported by air within mainland France.

♻️ Recycling cards at the end of their life is easy.

With a freepost return service at no cost to our users. The process is explained in our FAQ: How do I recycle my Swile card and its packaging?

*As part of our commitment to responsibility and resource efficiency, we have chosen to use up the last stocks of the previous card and packaging before rolling out these improved versions. So, users may still receive the previous versions until stocks run out.
