As a Swile beneficiary, the Relay by Card feature lets you link your personal bank card to your Swile card. Don’t confuse this with your personal account. This feature allows you to:
- Pay more than €25 in a single transaction using your Swile meal vouchers.
- Top up your transport subscription if you have Swile mobility vouchers.
🔎 How does the Relay by Card work on my Swile card?
The Relay by Card links your personal bank card to your Swile card. If you make a payment that exceeds your available Swile balance, the extra amount is debited from your bank account in real time. This top-up is limited to a maximum of €60 per transaction.
Example: you have €18 in Swile meal vouchers and make a payment of €32. Swile takes €18 from your meal voucher balance and €14 directly from your bank account.
The Relay by Card on your Swile card has several advantages:
- Only the amount actually used is debited.
- A smoother payment experience.
- No bank hold or pre-authorisation.
- Works even if your meal voucher balance is €0.
⚠️ If the additional bank debit fails
In rare cases, the additional bank debit for the Relay by Card on your Swile card may fail. If this happens:
- Swile still guarantees payment to the merchant.
- The Relay by Card feature is temporarily suspended.
- Swile will automatically try to debit the amount again, and a regularisation process will be offered in the Swile app.
🧐 How do I activate the Relay by Card on my Swile card?
To activate the Relay by Card from your Swile account:
- Step 1: Go to Menu > Cards.
- Step 2: Click on the relevant Swile card.
- Step 3: Click on Relay by Card then Set my card.
- Step 4: Select an existing bank card or add a new one.
- Step 5: A confirmation will be sent to your bank. Accept it and wait a few seconds for the feature to activate!
.
For the Swile card’s Relay by Card, all cards are accepted (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX and CB) as long as they were issued within the European Union.
💸 How can I pay more than €25 with my Swile meal vouchers?
With Relay by Card, you can pay your bill with your Swile card even if it’s over the legal daily limit (€25). The meal voucher part is automatically debited from your Swile account, and the rest is taken from the bank card registered to your Swile account.
Your personal bank card is just a top-up to your daily meal voucher balance: it’s used if you have an insufficient balance or have reached the legal limit.
Example: you need to pay €27 at a restaurant. Instead of making two payments, link your bank card. In one go, €25 is debited from your Swile account and €2 from your bank account.
🎁 Does Relay by Card work with my Swile gift vouchers and Holiday Benefits?
With the Swile card: Relay by Card does not work for Swile gift vouchers or Holiday Benefits. You can use your Swile card up to your available balance. If your purchase exceeds your Swile balance, pay part with your Swile card and the rest with another payment method.
On the Swile shop: if your purchase exceeds your gift voucher or Holiday Benefits balance, you can pay the difference with your personal bank card.
🚲 How can I top up my Swile mobility vouchers for my commute?
Relay by Card is available for commuting payments made with your Swile mobility vouchers. At a shop specialising in sustainable transport (like a bike shop) or at a transport terminal, pay with your Swile card. The maximum amount is taken from your Swile mobility vouchers, and the rest is automatically debited from your bank card. For more information, see our dedicated FAQ on Swile mobility benefits.
